Thunder’s Acevedo goes up to big leagues for one day
For the third time this season, a Thunder pitcher went straight to the big leagues.
The Yankees called up Domingo Acevedo on Saturday to replace Domingo German, whom was optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre following Friday night’s series opener against theMets.
Rated by MLB Pipeline as the Yankees’ seventhbest prospect, Acevedo has posted a 2.84 ERA with 40 strikeouts and 18 walks in 50 2/3 inningswith Trenton this season. His last six appearanceswere as a starter. He made three relief outings after coming off the disabled list May 28.
Acevedo had missed six weeks with a blister and needed time to build back his arm strength. His last two appearanceswere 105 pitches and 98 pitches on July 16 and July 8, respectively.
Hisupper90s fastball velocity is also back on track after a sluggish start to the season.
With Luis Cessa listed as the Yankees’ probable starter in place of German on July 25, Acevedo was expected to serve as a bullpen arm in the Bronx. But the 6-foot-7 right-hander was optioned back to Trenton after Saturday’s game against theMets. The Thunder are playing at Binghamton this weekend.
The Yankees signed Acevedo, 24, out of the Dominican Republic in October 2012. He has thrown 382 2/3 innings in the farmsystem.
Right-hander Jonathan Loaisiga made four starts for the Yankees after being called up from Trenton on June 15. The team sent him down to Triple-A on June 3, where he landed on the disabled list four days later with a shoulder injury.
Left-hander Ryan Bollinger also touched the big leagues May 23 before beingoptioned toTrenton. He did not pitch during his one game in a Yankees uniform.
