Union Busting

As your readers know on Wednesday June 27, 2018 the Supreme Court made their “Janus” decision that public unions could not collect dues on employees who choose not to become a member of the union. As a union member for 41 plus years this is not hard to see what’s going here. How can an individual opting out of the union have the nerve to be represented in their contract negotiations with their employer by the very union they opted out of?

How hypocritical is that? Five Supreme Court justices just set the labor movement back to the turn of the last century, Shame on them! We will survive this anti union movement our nation’s highest court. The most embarrassing part of this decision is Judge Alito who wrote the majority decision and is from Hamilton, New Jersey, my hometown. Some years ago Hamilton named a street after him by the library.

I am asking those involved to have his name removed from the sign. He is an embarrassment to unions. Lastly, we should all heed what the high court has been doing lately. I once read what a German Pastor said during the 1930’s? (Please for all the right wing conservatives make no assumptions or comparisons here I am merely stating a quote) The Pastor said

“In Germany they first came for the Communists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Jew. Then they came for the trade unionists, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t in a union. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn’t speak up because I wasn’t a Catholic. Then they came for me and by that time, no one was left to speak up. Think about it.

— Michael Maloney, President, Mercer County Central labor Council

Everyday, the rights of women are under attack and now, more than ever, women’s health is at a very critical point. The Trump Pence administration is implementing a gag rule that is a direct attack on family planning providers and the patients who depend on them for affordable health care. Title X is the only federal grant program dedicated to providing family planning and basic preventive care to everyone regardless of their income level, age, socioeconomic background, etc.

Implementing the gag rule will make it impossible for millions of patients to get access to not only family planning services including abortion, but to every day basic health care. This is because providers like Planned Parenthood will be prohibited from treating Title X patients.

I urge you to spread the word and to resist the Trump administration in implementing the gag rule. Protect Planned Parenthood because we all deserve the right and opportunity to live full, healthy lives.

— Pooja Vora, Planned Parenthood supporter
