Calling BS on the myth that Trenton offers nothing to do

- L.A. Parker Columnist L.A. Parker is a Trentonian columnist.

A discussion with a Springdale Golf Club member uncovered an old saying that challenges distorted opinions or exaggerations.

“So, I’m listening to this person and when they were done, I called “bulls**t,” she said.

Me, too, I’m following this woman’s lead with a similar response that attempts to shut down and discount all those people who whine that only limited amount of activities exist for young people in the City of Trenton.

Bull spit.

Last week, Dennis Walters, a professional golfer with an inspirational story to tell, visited Cadwalader Park for a free exhibition which had sponsorship from TPC Jasna Polana, a Princeton-based golf course that offers an annual Area-Wide Junior Clinic in conjunction with The First Tee of Greater Trenton.

Approximately 35 children attended Walters’ incredible show and talk that seeks to cultivate dream makers.

Walters, paralyzed from the waist down following an 1974 golf cart accident that ended his dream of being a successful PGA touring pro, has appeared with Jack Nicklaus, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Tiger Woods, etc.

Nearly every professional golfer, male or female, knows his story and mission that inspires people to never give up.

“If one dream does not work out, then start another dream,” Walters espouses.

Come on Trenton. These are the messages our young people, heck, even adults need to hear.

Dave “Poppy” Sanderson held a youth football camp at Trenton High last Saturday morning as his Education Outweighs Them All (EOTA) foundation offered a free t-shirt, lunch and instructions for the first 200 campers.

Troy Vincent, a Trenton-born NFL star and now a pro football executive, appeared for three hours while a measly 50 youth showed for this free event that taught attendees about football, hard work and living productive lives.

“I can’t worry about the kids that don’t show up. My main focus is offering football and life instruction to the young men and two young women who did show up,” Terrance Stokes, who directed the camp, said.

Youth can join The First Tee of Greater Trenton, National Junior Tennis & Learning of Trenton, Trenton Circus Squad, volunteer at numerous non-profits, swim at several city pools, visit the Trenton Free Public Library, attend events at William Trent House, New Jersey Museum, Planetarium, spend a day at South River Walk Park, attend a Trenton Thunder baseball game, join Micah Brooks basketball camp, join the crowd at Levitt AMP Trenton Music Series each Thursday at Mill Hill Park, etc.

Stopping here because my fingers have cramped.

Trenton residents should stop all this BS and tell the truth about an inability to get off your couch and stoops.

Vincent offered valuable insights about people empowered with the ability to choose. “We always have choices which means we always have a power to change and accomplish greatness,” Vincent noted.

Dr. Seuss did not attend but if were on the Trenton High football field, no doubt he would have offered this message from his “Oh, The Place You’ll Go.”

“Congratulations! Today is your day.

You’re off to Great Places! You’re off and away!

You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes

You can steer yourself, any direction you choose.

You’re on your own. And you know what you know.

And YOU are the guy who’ll decide where to go.”

Enough with the excuses, Trenton residents.

Get going. Start dreaming.
