Erickson takes lead in Mercer Senior Open

WEST WINDSOR » Ed Erickson scored a second consecutive 1-overpar 73 for a two-round total of 146 to take the lead in the Mercer County Men’s Senior Open.

Erickson toured Mercer Oaks East GC with two birdies and three bogeys. The Yardley CC member stands three shots clear of Vince Giannacio (73-76149), Ray “Ray-Ray” Pyontek (76-73-149) and Bob Gosselin (75-74-149) with a final round set for Sunday at Mountain View GC.

First-round leader Mark Cubberley (72-82-154) played ten shots worse to fall out of contention.

The Senior Open includes competitions in six age brackets, a set up that assures final-round drama.

Players aged 50-59 use blue teeing ground; 60-69 play from middle tees while 70-and-above golf from gold tees.

John Giori posted an even-par-72 and leads the 50-54 bracket with 152. Tony Andrews (74-80-154) and Martin Crounse (74-81155) stand second and third respectively.

Erickson leads the 55-59 division and Brian Rafferty (74-76-150) leads in the 6064 bracket.

The 65-69 group shows Dal Shin 74-80-154) on top while Pete Straup (75-72147) holds a seven-shot lead in the 70-74 division.
