Drive around Trenton and discoveries of people doing wonderful activities rates as a certainty.

New Salem Baptist Church on Saturday sponsored an afternoon meal for city residents, many who call the Trenton Rescue Mission home.

Volunteers, some not members of New Salem Baptist, chorused a shared joy of helping others.

“We have a homeless ministry and we come out once or twice a month to feed and clothe people who need help,” John Hollen said.

“I’ve been involved for about four years. We’re trying to take love to a new level. Just doing God’s work, doing this for the right reason.”

Well, that’s not exactly the whole story although Hollen has found that wonderful place in life when mission matters more than ego. New Salem Baptist Church Pastor Ernest “Skip” Wormley, Jr. set the record straight, pushed this conversation about a food ministry with truth, whole truth and nothing but the truth.

“That guy John Hollen? Man, he started his own food outreach. When we found out that he was feeding people out of his own pocket the church got behind him. We told John that if he was willing to do the leg work then New Salem would support him financially. So, what you have here is one mission, one goal,” Wormley said.

Hollen started his ministry “We Are One Trenton, Inc.” about four years ago as he answered God’s call.

“It’s an invitation by God to do his work. And when God calls, it’s good that people listen. We can’t do everything but we can do something,” Hollen noted.

“Putting clothes on our brothers and sisters backs, plus, preparing a meal for them, it helps. Even if it’s just for this day, we like to think our effort makes a difference,” Hollen explained.

Guests enjoyed barbecue and fellowship as volunteers offered water, food and comforting smiles.

“We’re hoping that our ministry can expand toward helping people with housing issues,” Hollen said.

“Right now? We give out food and clothing. We do what we do and it makes our hearts feel good.” ************** Fathers and Men United for a Better Trenton hosts a 12th annual Community Day, Saturday, August 25 at Cadwalader Park from 11 a.m.-7 p.m.
