PRINCETON JCT. » Hamilton West football coach Tom Ho glen admitted he was a little concerned with how his team would do Friday night with starting off the season on a bye week.

Those concerns were put at a minimum for Hoglen and the Hornets in their season opener against West Windsor-Plains boro by the performance of junior running back Kevin Boswell, who accountedfor three of the five Hamilton touchdown son the night to lead his team to a 35-12 victory.

The Hornets began the game trailing as WW-P’s switch to Jahmiq Johnson at quarterback paved huge dividends with the senior throwing a 52-yard bomb down the right side line to Marcus Williams for the team’ s first touch down of the season and a 6-0 lead.

Hamilton answered right back on its following possession with senior quarterback Eddie Fennell leading the way, completing passes of 39 and 13 yards, respectively, to set himself up for a one-yard score on the quarterback keeper to put the Hornets on the board and with the extra point by Dominic Cooper, the lead to begin the second quarter.

Johnson fired back for WW-P on the next drive, running for 14 yards on a fake punt to convert a fourth down to keep the drive alive.

A late-hit out bounds on the play by Hamilton pushed the ball all the way up to the Hornets’ 20 yard-line and W W-P took full advantage of the penalty as sophomore running back David Tunis ran it into the end zone the next play to give WW-P back the lead.

“Being a starting running back as sophomore is tough, but David did a great job handling that load in the game for us,” said WW-P coach Jeff Reilly. “Jahmiq did a good job at quarterback. Our spread offense ran well with him under center.”

Down a score again, the Hornets answered right back, this time by way of the special teams with Boswell running the kick off back 95 yards for a touch down to put Hamilton back in the lead.

It was the first ever kickoff return for a touch down by Boswell in his career. The Hornets had a chance to add to their lead before halftime, but a force fumble by the WW-P defense kept the score at 14-12 going into the half.

Boswell took over the game for the Hornets in the second half. After the Hamilton defense forced a fumble, Boswell turned the turnover into points by rushing in for his second score of the game from four yards out to put the Hornets up 21-12.

With 7:48 left to play, Boswell punched in the dag ger for the Hornets, rushing for his third touch down of the evening from 19 yards out to make it a three-score game.

“My offensive line carried me tonight,” Boswell said. “They opened up a lot of holes for me. I’m excited about the win.”

The Hamilton offense accounted for 235 yards rushing on the ground in the win.

Fennell added in his second touch down of the game with 5:18 left to play, running in for a 34yard score to make it 35-12.

Fennell threw for 71 yards in the win. The Hornets defense blanked WW Pin the second half.

“Our two sophomore defensive ends Tyler Williams and Joseph Muni, made some great plays for us in the second half,” Hoglen said. “I’m proud of my kids. We hung in there all game. Our guys came out hungry in the second half and were able to wore down WWP.”

The Hornets start the season 1-0, while WW-P drops to 0-2 on the season.
