Rock South hands shorthanded Truman first loss
NEWTOWN, PA. » Although Truman was clearly not operating on all cylinders with four key offensive starters missing after being ejected the previous week, the bottom line is it was the Council Rock South football team getting the job done Friday night.
Opening play in the Suburban One National League, Vince Bedesem’s Rock South pulled away at the end for an important 20-6 victory at the Walt Snyder Stadium in a matchup of two of the league’s better teams.
With the win, Rock South ran its record to 3-1. Truman (3-1), meanwhile, suffered its first loss and must now regroup quickly with Neshaminy due in town next Saturday night.
Should Rock South go on to a winning season and earn a playoff berth, it won’t have any trouble remembering one of the key moments of the year.
Seemingly in control with an 8-0 lead in the fourth quarter, Rock South got torched by a 72-yard back-side touchdown run by Terrance Rogers down the left sideline.
Although Truman’s bid for two to the tie the game was thwarted when Rogers was thrown for a loss on a run, the Tigers got right back in business when Jahni Coleman intercepted a tipped pass to set his team up at the Rock South 36 yard line.
The momentum really seemed to be with Truman at this point, but it was here where the Golden Hawk defense stood tallest by turning the ball over on downs.
Even better, Chase Patterson then burned the visitors with a 68-yard touchdown run up the middle to put Rock South up by the score of 14-6.
Truman still had time with over four minutes remaining, but when it was forced to put the ball up in the air on third down disaster struck as Daniel Scannapieco picked off the pass and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown. Game over.
Rock South later got an interception from Matt Cecchia as well to complete a strong defensive effort against a Truman team that had piled up nearly 150 points in its first three games.
A big key for the Rock South was allowing just the one big play (Rogers’ 72-yard bolt) against a Truman team missing its starting quarterback, tight end and two key linemen.

After the Patriots closed to within a point with 2:15 remaining, they decided to go for two points and the win. It didn’t work out as Pennsbury intercepted a pass in the end zone. JayVon McNeil scored a pair of touchdowns for Pennsbury, which will be back in action next week when it takes on Council Rock North in its SONL opener.
NESHAMINY 47, CR NORTH 14 LANGHORNE, PA. » Brody McAndrew had three touchdown passes, including two to Zack Canimore and one to Ryan O’Connor. Cory Joyce added a 55 yard punt return for a TD while Oleh Mandy had a 65 yard TD run and Chris James chipped in a 13 yard TD run for the winners.
