NEW EGYPT » The Trenton Catholic Academy and New Egypt High boys soccer teams are doing what they need to do to get better.

That means playing stronger at all points on the field, which they went about trying to showcase when these Burlington County Scholastic League teams from different divisions went at each other Friday.

Like two up-and-coming squads, their efforts led to a 2-2 tie after two 10-minute overtime sessions, despite their visible improvement.

“They have a good team, so that’s what you have to expect,” said TCA senior goalkeeper Christopher Spinden, who had to make 19 saves to keep the game tied. “This was a lot better than our first game. We moved the ball better. Our defense played better. We got the ball out of the box better.”

Not only that, but the Iron Mikes, who dropped a 6-1 decision to Maple Shade in their opener Wednesday, took the lead — twice.

Loyalty Bush put the visitors ahead 13 minutes in when he connected on a pass from Chazz Jones. All their hard work could have been drained when Trevor Edinger knocked in a rebound to tie the game with 17 seconds left in the half.

Bush got the lead back 5:31 into the second half when he was taken down and converted a penalty kick. But once again, the Warriors battled back to tie when Edinger headed home a free kick from Chase Sempervive with 12:34 left in regulation.

“We were doing better as the game went on,” junior midfielder Edinger said. “We’re trying to get more bodies in the box. We want to get more people on the ball. We definitely played better from the second half on.”

New Egypt (1-1-1) of the BCSL Freedom Division looked like it would untie the game, especially when Sempervive hit a 40-yard free kick off the crossbar with 6:35 left in regulation, then Jonathan Olivera also rattled the bar with 6:48 left in the second OT.

Bush and Jones each had opportunities to get TCA (0-1-1) of the BCSL’s new Independence Division its first win in OT, but Warriors goalkeeper Daniel Blomgren made 10 saves to keep the teams in deadlock.

“I can feel the team aspect changing for us,” Spinden said. “I see bright things in our future.”
