Police release tips on how to reduce property crimes

TRENTON >> Historical­ly, cops notice an upward trend in certain property crimes that correlate with the change in temperatur­es.

These crimes include theft, auto theft, burglary to homes and vehicles.

The Trenton Police Department is asking citizens to help reduce the number of property crimes, while also reducing chances of becoming a victim.

Using the listed prevention steps will significan­tly reduce the chance of becoming a victim of property crime, police say.

Auto Theft

• Never leave a vehicle running unattended with keys in the ignition.

• Never leave a vehicle unlocked and ensure windows are up.

• Do not leave an extra key inside of the vehicle.

• If vehicle is equipped with an alarm system, use it.

• If vehicle has an anti-theft device, use it.

Home Burglary

• Always lock doors.

• Never leave ground floor windows open at night or when away from home.

• Remove window air conditione­rs when not in use during the winter months.

• Do not leave items outdoors that may be used by an intruder to assist in gaining

access to a home (tools, ladders, chairs, tables, storage containers, etc.).

• Use lighting on timers and motion detectors.

• If the home is equipped with an alarm system, use it. Post signs or stickers

indicating the home is alarmed to deter burglars.

• Report suspicious activity.

Burglary to Vehicle

• Lock vehicles with the windows up.

• Don’t leave anything of value inside a vehicle in plain sight.

• If possible, park in welllit areas.
