Get checked

-

More than 3.5 million diagnoses of skin cancer happen each year, 76,100 being melanoma.

For adults 25-29, melanoma is the most common form and the second most for those 15-29. With one in five Americans developing skin cancer in their lifetimes.

Melanoma is the most dangerous type of skin cancer and leading cause of death from skin disease, however typically curable if detected and treated early.

While these statistics are daunting, prevention is simple. Chances of developing melanoma are significantly reduced through protective clothing, monitoring hours outside, applying SPF and regular examinations.

Personally, I had limited understanding of the risks of skin cancer before researching this bill, and due to my fair skin, I should be particularly cautious.

Due to early detection being essential, the month of May in New Jersey will be designated as “Skin Cancer Detection and Prevention Month” and the first Monday of May, “Melanoma Monday”.

This awareness tactic is being instilled to educate about risks they’re exposing themselves to, without knowing.

Early detection is essential, this bill is a great way to get everyone to get checked and take the first step in protecting themselves. While many may think it will be too costly to advertise widely, the benefits of awareness outweigh that cost. Therefore, this bill will be very effective first step and succeed in raising the necessary awareness.

By understanding the risks, but also the benefits of early detection, it will encourage everyone to be proactive in maintaining their health.
