Murder suspect still sought, person of interest cleared
TRENTON >> Authorities are still looking for the suspect responsible for the midday killing of a city resident after another man suspected of being involved was cut loose without being charged following hours of interrogation.
Police didn’t release the name of the man who was initially considered a person of interest when he was taken to police headquarters for questioning following Wednesday’s brazen murder of 28-yearold Quanmir Spears.
Detectives initially focused on a man in a fluorescent hooded sweatshirt who ran into a nearby home after Spears was shot on the sidewalk in the 300 block of Spring Street.
But that individual appears to have been cleared of having any involvement in the killing, a police spokesman said Thursday.
Police initially focused on the man after detectives from the Street Crimes Unit knocked on the door of a home near where the murder happened. The man answered, according to law enforcement sources, but quickly made a run for it until he was tackled. He was taken to police headquarters but was eventually cut loose without charges.
Trenton Police spokesman Lt. Darren Zappley said detectives now believe the man was a friend of Spears who may have interacted with him before the 3:40 p.m. fatal shooting.
Police zeroed in on the man because he was “in the vicinity” at the time of the killing but later determined he may have been a “witness” to the crime, Zappley said. “It looked like he had involvement as
