Gia Girman, Nottingham

CVC Coach of the Year

Christie Fink, Nottingham

Steinert:

The word unstoppable gets thrown around a lot in sports, but it might be the best way to describe Gia Girman’s sophomore season.

Super or sensational would work, too.

Nobody in the county was more prolific in front of goal than Girman. The Nottingham High forward scored 36 goals, added nine assists and is our Colonial Valley Conference Player of the Year.

“She’s amazing,” junior teammate Emily Midura said. “She’s the best player I’ve seen in a very long time.”

Girman’s 36 goals finished tied for seventh in the state and ranks as the second most by a CVC player in a single season. When Girman scored five in the Northstars’ first-round playoff victory, she passed West Windsor South’s Andrea Velasco (33 in 1996 and 97) and Hopewell Valley’s Katarina Nilsson (35 in 2016) for the most in the modern era. Only Hamilton West’s Elyse Diamond (47 in 1981) has scored more in a single season.

“She just composed herself, was smarter and played for the team this year,” Nottingham coach Christie Fink said. “Yeah, she had 36 goals, but she could have had so many more. She was very unselfish in the box. She just matured, grew and kind of understood that she had to have a bigger role on our team and took control of that.”

Girman netted her 36 goals in 18 games, for an average of two per contest. After scoring 14 as a freshman, she has 50 in her career,
