Ongoing Probe
Investigators interviewed five or six people so far, but Ward, the assistant prosecutor, wouldn’t say if they’re being focused on as potential suspects.
One of the interviewees was the victim, who confirmed to investigators she consented to sexual activity with the first man who she
was originally caught with in another part of the rehabilitation wing, the guard said.
She said she didn’t scream or call for help when the other men bumrushed in and took advantage of her because she was outnumbered and scared of what they might to do her, the security guard said.
The victim was taken to the hospital where she underwent a sexual assault examination, the guard said. Those results, if there are any, may be compared against DNA samples that are expected to be taken from some of the alleged perpetrators.
Ward said it’s still early in the investigation and his office hasn’t collected any DNA samples as of yet. Those would likely require judge-issued court orders, he said.
Ann Klein also has surveillance
cameras and a monitor room that may help investigators.
A security guard can watch what’s happening in others parts of the building, the security guard said, but it’s unclear whether anyone was monitoring what was happening inside the facility at the time of the gang rape.
Meanwhile, the guard who left his post has been put on a no-patient contact order following the gang rape, but his colleagues said he is being unfairly targeted as a “scapegoat.”
Security guards said they feel they have an obligation to speak up because conditions aren’t improving and are growing more dire.
“It makes me sick to my stomach,” one guard said of the gang rape. “My concern is it’s going to get worse. Everything has been turned upside down.”
