Robbinsville beats three teams at Notre Dame

LAWRENCE TWP. >> In the highlight matchup of a quad meet at Notre Dame Saturday, the Robbinsville-Hightstown match figured to be close before even got started.

As it turned out, it was also largely decided before it did get started because by winning the coin flip Robbinsville had the of luxury of controlling a matchup in the middle that helped propel the Ravens to a 37-33 win over Hightstown.

In addition to the win over Hightstown, Robbinsville also beat Ewing, 54-24, and Notre Dame, 57-18, to complete a perfect 3-0 day and win its first three dual matches of the year.

In other results from the quad, Hightstown beat Ewing, 60-16, and Notre Dame, 58-8, and Notre Dame beat Ewing, 54-18.

Following Saturday’s results, Hightstown is now 6-1, Ewing is 0-5 and Notre Dame is 3-3.

“To win the match we absolutely needed to win the toss,’’ said Robbinsville coach Sean Flynn.

“I figured it would be 30 something to 30 something,’’ said Hightstown coach Mike Russo. “We had three guys out and really needed to win the flip.’’

Hightstown had to go first at 138 and that left Robbinsville in the position to forfeit to him and save Vincent Truong for the match-ending 132-pound bout. Sure enough, Truong was able to ride out Michael Bellars for most of the first and third periods to post a 4-1 decision and complete a big comeback with Raven victories from 106 through 132.

“Our heavyweight (Mateo Cruz) saving us three points was big, too, ‘’ said Flynn. “And our freshman 113 pounder Aiden Weil came up big as well (with a major decision). All of our lightweights came through. They all did their job.’’

In that late run were pins by Shailen Savur (106) and Isaiah Lederman (with a first-period cradle at 126). Drake Torrington also delivered with a major at 120 in a match Robbinsville was able to win despite forfeiting four weights.

Although Hightstown was forced to settle for a 2-1 day, it did get two wins from the likes of middleweights Kether Thornton and Alex Stavrou.

As for Ewing, defending Mercer County Tournament champion Chris Seifert went 2-0. One of those wins was by the score of 2-1 over Hightstown’s Bryan Bonilla, who posted a solid 8-3 win over Notre Dame’s Omar Santos.
