CVC grapplers show well on opening night at Region VI

- Staff Report

JACKSON >> A winner of 10 bouts in the opening round at Region VI Thursday, the Colonial Valley Conference will have a healthy presence of 20 wrestlers in the quarterfinals when the tournament resumes Friday night.

With its 10 district champs having the night off, the CVC is particularly well represented at 152 and at heavyweight.

In the 152-pound weight class, Trenton’s Tee Lormia and Robbinsville’s Jack Milazzo both advanced. Lormia will now take on Nottingham’s Jerry Andaluz and Milazzo will face Allentown’s Nick Golden. With both bouts in the lower half of the bracket, this guarantees the CVC will have a wrestler in the final at 152.

At heavyweight, meanwhile, Mercer had three winners as Trenton’s Caleb Spaulding, Steinert’s Thomas Wasylenko and Hamilton’s Dan Ornosky also moved into the quarters. Spaulding and Wasylenko are in a tough top of the bracket, while Ornosky is in the bottom with district champions Chris Seifert of Ewing and Omar Santos of Notre Dame. Seifert and Santos will square off in the quarters.

Coupled with district champion Obifunna Ezeigbo at 220 and the once-beaten Seifert , Ewing has three remaining as MCT champion James Kim also advanced at 160. This weight also featured a nice win for Hightstown’s Chris Stavrou, who posted an upset by pinning Allentown’s John Kuchar.

Trenton has three remaining as well with Quameer Brown, who beat Robbinsville’s Vincent Truong, 5-3, at 132, Lormia and Spaulding.

Robbinsville leads the way with four with Milazzo moving into the quarters along with the Ravens’ three district champs. One of those is topseeded and undefeated Garrett Bilgrav at 170. Should he win his quarterfinal, Bilgrav will tie the CVC record for career wins at 138.

Northern Burlington got victories from Garrett Totten (106) and Ryan Feig (152). This leaves NBC with five remaining after Travis Kotelnicki (113), Anthony Giampietro (170) and undefeated Tommy Hill (195) all had the night off.
