Patient sues ex-Ann Klein guard, brass over her rape
TRENTON >> A woman who was raped inside troubled Ann Klein Forensic Center in 2017 is suing her attacker, calling his actions “malicious and sadistic.”
Lauren Doe, a 29-yearold former patient at the state-run psychiatric center in Trenton, has filed a federal civil rights lawsuit against ex-medical security officer Kenneth Glover.
Glover was convicted and imprisoned after his repeated rapes of Doe came to the attention of state authorities.
Glover was charged with two counts of aggravated sexual assault, and a single count of official misconduct and invasion of privacy, but admitted to only the official misconduct charge as part of a plea deal that didn’t require him to register as a sex offender.
He is serving out his fiveyear prison sentence.
The lawsuit accuses past and present upper brass at the forensic center of failing to keep Doe, who is now incarcerated at the Edna Mahan Correctional Facility for Women in Hunterdon County, safe from her rapist.
The suit alleges brass shrugged off “repeated indications and signs” of Glover’s “violent and assaultive propensities.”
Glover entered the woman’s room March 6, 2017, when she reported that her toilet was broken.
Glover lifted her shirt and photographed her breasts without her permission, the lawsuit says, before raping her.
He went into her room again the next day, while she was sleeping, and raped her a second time, according to the lawsuit.
Doe reported the sexual assault to staff members but wasn’t believed due to the “deliberate and callous indifference” of staff members, the lawsuit claims.
A supervisor watched the surveillance tape and came away with the impression that “there was no possibility” Doe was raped, the civil complaint stated.
The woman’s allegations were still reported to police who also watched the tape and had the victim undergo a sexual assault examination.
Glover was charged after the results of the sex assault exam came back.
The woman says she has suffered physical, emotional and psychological trauma from the attack.
The suit faulted the forensic center’s shoddy hiring practices, background checks and inadequate staffing levels with contributing to her attack.
Glover began working at Ann Klein in August 2013. He made $44,557 annually when he was fired, though records showed he padded his pockets with tens of thousands of dollars in overtime pay during his tenure.
Doe’s attorney from Newark-based Jacoby & Meyers didn’t immediately respond to a request for comment.
Ann Klein has been under the microscope in recent months over a series of attacks that have left patients and security guards frightened for their lives.
Another female patient at the forensic center was gang-raped last year in a brutal attack the day after Thanksgiving.
Guards said it happened when they were shortstaffed due to the holiday weekend, during the rehabilitation hour as another guard temporarily left his post to help out a colleague.
The Mercer County Prosecutor’s Office said Monday it is still investigating the gang rape and hasn’t brought charges against any of the alleged perpetrators.
