The Trentonian (Trenton, NJ)

Trenton’s Williams, ND’s Porter earn Player of Year from coaches

-

players from the 2018-19 season were named.

On the boys’ side, Trenton senior forward Jordan Williams came away with Player of the Year honors atop a first team which included his teammate, senior guard/forward Nassir Hodge, Ewing senior guard Caleb Stokes, Hopewell Valley senior guard Milo De Los Santos, Notre Dame senior guard/forward Mike Kane and West Windsor-Plainsboro North senior forward Jaden Sands.

On the girls’ side, Notre Dame junior forward Erika Porter took home the Player of the Year prize, leading a first team which included Allentown senior guard Lauren Coiante, Ewing senior guard Jaycee Lowe, Steinert senior guard Natalie Mehl, Trenton junior forward Ishuana Hunter and WW-P North senior guard/forward Jordan Brown.

Second and third team picks as well as honorable mention choices were also announced by the coaches.

Guest speaker James Angiolino took the crowd on a roller coaster of emotions as he told tales of he and his wife Nicole’s journey with son, Joey, who died of a rare genetic disease called Hurler’s Syndrome July 16, 2010, leading the Angiolinos to found Joey’s Little Angels, which has been named as 2018 Non-Profit of the Year.

The Angiolinos and many of the ballers in attendance have grown Joey’s Little Angels from a little in-home donation appeal to one that drew 14,000 toys which were distributed to 19 different pediatric hospitals nationwide last year.

More tears were shed as the story of former Hamilton West boys basketball player Christian Somma was told. The CVCBA annually honors the memory of Somma, who died May 27, 2007 at the age of 16 after battling stage four metastatic colon cancer, with its Courage Awards. This year, those were presented to Nottingham’s Aaliyah Oliver and Hightstown’s Brynn Peterson before the league awarded its final plaque of the night to Referee of the Year Bobby Davison.
