Thunder to celebrate Hispanic Heritage by becoming El Trueno de Trenton
TRENTON >> The Trenton Thunder will become El Trueno de Trenton for three nights in June as a celebration of Hispanic Heritage.
The team announced its three Trueno de Trenton night’s for June 1, 8 and 29 this season as part of Minor League Baseball’s Copa de la Diversion initiative.
“The Latin community has on significant impact on both the game of baseball and the capital city,” Thunder General Manager Jeff Hurley said at a press event held inside the home clubhouse at Arm & Hammer Park on Monday afternoon. “Trenton is home to home to approximately 30,000 Latino and Hispanic residents, which accounts for about 35 percent of the city’s population.
“In addition, about 30 percent of Trenton’s population are native Spanish speakers. I’m thrilled to welcome and celebrate all Hispanic community members this season.”
The team will wear teal and yellow jerseys with ‘Trueno’ spelled out across the chest on those three nights.
June 1 will be Dominican Republic Night, June 8 will be Central American Night and June 29 will be Puerto Rico Night.
The three dates will feature Trueno merchandise, live music, fireworks and local restaurants, Hurley said. The June 8 game will feature player car strips featuring Gary Sanchez, Luis Severino, Gleyber Torres and Miguel Andujar to the first 1,500 fans in attendance.
“Trueno is a direct Spanish translation of the Thunder name that has been with us since our inaugural season in 1994,” Hurley said. “The vibrant Trueno moniker aims to represent the city of Trenton and its Latino community within the ballpark.”
