Labor Day may signal the unofficial end of summer but let’s face it — summer’s done.

Cool early-morning temperatures confirm the end of a season that played out faster than many had hoped. In fact, school’s already in for Foundation Academies students who returned to classrooms on Monday, Aug. 19, almost three weeks before local public school peers.

The successful city charter school has the right idea about returning students to school ahead of many others although Trenton officials and school administrators must solve the dreadful traffic problems that occur on West State St. Mindboggling that this severe nuisance has produced no solution. Martin Luther King Jr. School presents a similar problem on Brunswick Ave. as motorists double-park. School officials should not allow the Mister Softie ice cream truck to park near the premises as school days end.

Trenton pulses excitement as the opening of the $155 million renovated high school awaits with hopes and dreams of classroom success although people with less brilliant minds than Albert Einstein know that hard work, desire and dedication delivers education victories.

Jump start your child’s 20192020 educational year by attending the Trenton Public School District’s “Back to School Extravaganza” event on Wednesday, August 28. Gates will open at 10am at the Trenton Board of Education Building located at 108 North Clinton Avenue with free parking available at Grant Elementary School.

All parents /guardians of Trenton Public School District students are invited to join district staff, partners, and community organizations for a chance to receive educational material, giveaway/raffles, school supplies and a free grilled lunch, which will be provided by the Food Service Department, Aramark.

Families that attend this event will have the chance to meet representatives from their child’s school site and receive free school supplies and book bags. This year all families regardless of their income status will be eligible for free lunch. Recipients must complete a household survey form which will be available at the Extravaganza.

The event includes free health and vision screenings. Great Clips will provide students with free haircuts. An email offered these comments about the fifth annual school kickoff party. Free back packs and a BBQ lunch are part of the day’s event.

“We have had tremendous success with the Extravaganza in previous years and we expect this event to be as successful, said Denise Kreiss, Parent Coordinator/Homeless Liaison for Trenton Public School Districts. “Thank you again to all of our wonderful community partners and vendors who continue to support this joyous event. The school district is so grateful for our major sponsors; Aetna, Great Clips, Comcast, Horizon, Aramark, Source 4 Teachers, Motivated Security, Smith Family Foundation, and TASK.”

Several hundred guests will attend which makes for a crowded affair that requires patience and courtesy. Be considerate and respect each other during this fantastic event that deliver positive vibes for a productive school year.

By the way, Trenton Public School officials should consider a summer reading program for all students, plus, a community service component for high school students while state official should shorten summer break and lengthen school days. We need a progressive education agenda for students and families.
