TRENTON >> Police gravely wounded a man Sunday afternoon sometime before 4 p.m., on the 1900 block of Calhoun Street, authorities confirmed.

The man was allegedly armed, sources said, when police encountered him near Calhoun and Jennett streets.

The man pointed a weapon, but did not open fire, at police officers who opened fire striking him at least two times, including once in the head and again in the shoulder, sources said.

There was no immediate word whether cops recovered a gun on scene.

Details of the shooting were still sketchy, but sources said the man had died.

Mercer County Prosecutor Angelo Onofri, who was on scene, initially said via text message the man was killed during the encounter.

He texted back shortly thereafter confirming the man was shot in the head and had been taken to Capital Health Regional Medical Center where he was reportedly clinging to life. He had not been pronounced yet and hasn’t been identified.

Law enforcement from local, state and county agencies were on scene. Investigators from the state Attorney General’s Office were notified of the fatal police shooting, Onofri said.

The AG’s Shooting Response Team handles all fatal police-involved shootings as part of a new law Gov. Phil Murphy signed this year.

County prosecutors normally handled shootings involving local police and they were turned over to the AG’s office if they involved county or state police. But the new law requires the AG’s office to supersede county prosecutors in fatal police shootings.

An AG’s spokesperson said either the AG’s office or the county prosecutor’s office would provide information. Sunday’s police-involved shooting followed another shooting Saturday night that involved a 33-year-old man who was wounded on the 200 block of East Hanover Street. He was still in critical condition at the hospital, according to sources.

No arrests have been announced in Saturday’s shooting.
