GIANTS GAMEDAY

-

The Game: Giants (2-5) at Lions (2-3-1), Ford Field, 1 p.m. (FOX)

The Line: Detroit by 7

History: The Lions lead the all-time series, 23-21-1. Detroit won the most recent meeting in 2017, 24-10. New York won four of five matchups prior to that. Key Matchups:

Giants LG Will Hernandez vs. Lions DT Damon Harrison: The Giants’ offensive line has been strongest in the interior. Hernandez is Pro Football Focus’ ninthrated guard in the NFL. He next lines up across from his old teammate. Harrison, who was an All-Pro for New York in 2016, was traded to Detroit for a fifth-round pick last year.

Giants WR Golden Tate vs. Lions CB Justin Coleman: After a quiet Week 4 debut, Tate has had 182 yards and a touchdown on 20 targets in the last two games. With Sterling Shepard out for a third straight week, Tate will again command the secondary’s attention. There is ripe opportunity for success because Darius Slay, Detroit’s two-time Pro Bowler, is sidelined by a hamstring injury. Giants CB Janoris Jenkins vs. Lions WR Marvin Jones: Jenkins could be on the chopping block before next week’s trade deadline. He’s no longer an elite cornerback but still a serviceable starter who now gets a chance to contain Jones, who erupted for four touchdowns against the Vikings last week.

Giants run defense vs. Lions RB Ty Johnson: New York yielded 126 rushing yards and three touchdowns last week to Chase Edmonds, Arizona’s backup. Only Minnesota’s Dalvin Cook rushed for more in the Giants’ first seven games. Now Johnson replaces Detroit starter Kerryon Johnson, who was averaging merely 3.3 yards per carry before landing on injured reserve with a knee injury.

Injury Report:

Giants: OUT: WR Sterling Shepard (concussion), CB Corey Ballentine (concussion).

Lions: OUT: CB Darius Slay (hamstring), DT Mike Daniels (foot), CB Amani Oruwariye (knee). QUESTIONABLE: DT Damon Harrison (groin/rest), FB Nick Bawden (foot).

Giant Facts: Right guard Kevin Zeitler is making his 80th straight start, which leads all active guards. … The Giants have been sacked on 7.04 percent of passing plays, which is the 13th-highest mark in the NFL. … The team has turned the ball over 18 times — three more than any other team.

The Prediction: Lions 28, Giants 24
