Hunterdon Central takes second behind Southern in holiday tourney

FLEMINGTON >> It looks like it’s going to be difficult to stop the Southern High wrestling team from capturing a second straight Group V Group state championship in Feb- ruary.

Competing on Saturday in the Hunterdon Central Christmas Tournament, which is the oldest holiday tournament in the nation, Southern won the team title with 219 points and an impressive six individual champions.

Host Hunterdon Central, which is a major contender in Group V itself, was a strong second on its home mat with 199.5 points.

Champions for Hunterdon Central were Nick Canonica (126), Colton Washleski (145) and Anthony Romaniello (152).

Other local champs included Shawnee’s Jake Hastings (113) and Seneca’s Ryan Eisenhower (182).

Cherokee did well with a thirdplace finish in the team standings. Notre Dame finished in 15th place and Hamilton came in last in the 17-team field.
