Princeton drops township rival PDS

PRINCETON >> While Saturday may have seemed like a battle for four wins between the girls’ basketball teams at Princeton High and Princeton Day School, it was actually a battle for consistency.

These young squads have been undergoing that same battle all season. To be better, the players are learning they’ll need to be more consistent.

The Tigers managed that Saturday in topping the visiting Panthers, 46-27.

Sophomore center Nora Devine scored 14 points and junior guard Ashley Tumposwky scored nine to help Princeton snap a three-game losing streak, while sophomore forward Sofia Aguayo chipped in eight points, 10 rebounds, five steals and two assists.

“Our defense is getting a lot better, and today we executed our plays really well,” Aguayo said. “We’ve been putting in a lot of hard work. I think we’re getting better.”

With no seniors on head coach Dave Kosa’s roster, the Tigers have needed to be patient as the players have gotten used to varsity. Aguayo is one player who you can visibly see getting better as she plays bigger. Standing between 5-foot-11 and six-feet, she could get even taller considering her dad, Felix, who used to play basketball in Peru, is 6-foot-4. For now, it is a matter of building up the muscle she needs to compete with other inside players.

“I’m working on getting stronger,” Aguayo said. “As a team, we make a lot of turnovers, so we need to make better decisions and better passes.”

Head coach Liz Loughlin’s PDS squad is also inexperienced with only two seniors. Coming in the Panthers had won two of their last three games, so they were hoping to keep their successful week going against their crosstown rival.

“Our energy has been a lot higher this week and our hearts have been in it,” Princeton Day School 5-6 junior guard Caroline Topping said. “There have been games where we’re not all in it and games where we have distractions we don’t need on the court. This week, we’ve really been coming together and bonding.”

Topping, a three-sport athlete from Allentown, directed the Panthers against the Tigers with eight points. Half of those came in the first half to help her team stay within 2514 at the break. But Topping’s baseline jump shot with 2:16 left in the third quarter and 14-foot jumper with 7:12 left in the fourth were the only baskets her squad managed after Princeton reeled off the first nine points of the half.
