No. 25 Rutgers falls to Michigan at the Garden

NEW YORK >> Brandon Johns Jr. scored a career-high 20 points and Michigan won its 10th straight in games at Madison Square Garden, beating No. 25 Rutgers 69-63 on Saturday.

Jon Teske added 14 points as the Wolverines (13-8, 4-6 Big Ten) improved to 12-0 against Rutgers, including a victory in the 1976 Final Four.

Michigan used a 20-5 run over a 10-minute span in the first half to take a 27-17 lead. Montez Mathis hit 3-pointers on back-to back possession­s as Rutgers (16-6, 7-4) chipped away, pulling within 37-34 at the break. Mathis had a steal and a fast break layup that put the Scarlet Knights up 38-37 with 17:39 to go. XAVIER 74, SETON HALL 62 NEWARK >> Tyrique Jones had 19 points and 18 rebounds and the Musketeers (14-8, 3-6 Big East) opened a big lead early and beat No. 10 Seton Hall, ending the Pirates’ 10-game winning streak.

Xavier held Seton Hall (16-5, 8-1) to 22.2% shooting from the field and limited preseason All America Myles Powell to nine points in posting their biggest win of the season. CREIGHTON 76, VILLANOVA 61 PHILADELPH­IA >> Denzel Mahoney had 21 points and Mitch Ballock had nine of his 15 points in the second half to help the Bluejays (17-5, 6-3 Big East) defeat No. 8 Villanova.

Collin Gillespie and Justin Moore each had 18 points for the Wildcats (17-4, 7-2), who had won seven in a row.

TCNJ 98, MONTCLAIR ST. 88 EWING >> Randall Walko scored a career-best 38 points on 10-for-15 from the field and the Lions (12-8, 9-4 NJAC) picked up a key conference win over the Red Hawks (9-11, 7-6).

Women’s Basketball

RIDER 48, MONMOUTH 25 LAWRENCEVI­LLE >> Stella Johnson scored 16 points, Lea Favre added 18 and the Broncs (17-2, 10-0 MAAC) kept their unbeaten conference record in tact with a 14th consecutiv­e victory.

Rider held the Hawks (5-15, 2-9) to 15.4% shooting and 11 second-half points.

PRINCETON 60, HARVARD 46 CAMBRIDGE, MASS. >> Julia Cunningham notched a team-high 16 points and the Tigers (15-1, 3-0 Ivy League) continued to roll with another strong defensive effort against the Crimson (11-6, 1-2). Bella Alarie had 13 points and Carlie Littlefiel­d added 10. MONTCLAIR ST. 52, TCNJ 38 EWING >> Shannon Devitt scored 14 points to go over 1,000 for her career, but the Lions (13-7, 10-3 NJAC) fell to the Red Hawks (16-4, 11-2).
