Split Decision: Will we ever get back to work like normal?
My job at The Trentonian has changed dramatically over the years. Used to be I had to physically be in the office to file my columns. Then, sometime in the past, that changed, and I were able to do so remotely.
And I started working from home once in a while, and I liked it.
Then two winters ago, the heat went kaput at the office for few days, and I took my act to my home. And I liked it. And I kept doing it. And my boss was - and continues to be - fine with it.
I truly enjoy working from home. Or my backyard. Or on the road. Anywhere but behind a desk in an office environment. I find I’m happier and more productive. My job allows for it, my boss allows for it, and really - my job is zero percent office dependent. In fact, it’s the opposite. I should be out and about all day - either physically or virtually - looking for stories to tell.
And that’s what I do. And that’s what I’m continuing to do during the coronavirus crisis.
Although I will say this: I miss having the option to go to the office. (To be clear, that option exists, but I haven’t been within spitting distance of another human outside my immediate family for two weeks, and I don’t see that changing anytime soon.)
It’s like what Cinderella, one of my favorite hair metal bands of all-time, famously said: You don’t know what you’ve got ‘til it’s gone.
One day, I look forward to popping in the office again. I can’t wait. What a time it’s going to be.
