Senior Spotlight: Notre Dame’s Emily Guenther

- Joe O’Gorman Columnist

As the spring sports season has been canceled, The Trentonian continues to recognize the girls lacrosse seniors that were denied their final season.

Emily Guenther was a key ingredient to Notre Dame’s success last season, scoring 37 goals as the Irish won the sectional title. She was one of ND’s most consistent and dependable players. A two-sport athlete, Guenther was a member of the cross country team in the fall.

JO’G » What were your thoughts on the season and your senior year ending so suddenly?

EG» I was beyond words at first. I remember talking to the team and no one could believe how this was happening to us. As time went on, it became easier to let go of my long awaited senior season, but I’ll forever miss the memories I could’ve made that come with spring senior year.

JO’G » What has the Notre Dame lacrosse program meant to you?

EG» I will forever be grateful to be a part of the family that is Notre Dame lacrosse. Coach Fish, Trost and Bob not only made me into a more well-rounded lacrosse player, but a better person as well. It is like a family and even though I don’t get to have this season, I know I’ll always be a part of the team.

JO’G » You scored 37 goals last year and were a key to the sectional title, what were your hopes and expectations for this season? EG» Over the winter, I spent hours after school in the weight room with Coach McKenna. I was really expecting to come out much stronger and faster than I did my junior year. The team all together looked great on the days that had practice, and we showed a lot of promise to dominate our conference on both the offensive and defensive ends of the field. JO’G » What life lessons have you learned from this pandemic?

EG» I’ve learned that you never know when you’re in the good times until you’re out of them. I wish I didn’t take all of my great times I had at Notre Dame for granted.

JO’G » What are your plans for the fall?

EG» I’m playing midfield on the University of Indianapolis women’s lacrosse team. I will be majoring in exercise science on a pre physical therapy track. JO’G » What is your favorite ND moment?

EG» My favorite moment at Notre Dame was prayer before every lacrosse game or cross country meet. The atmosphere with the team and being that in tune with one another is an energy that can’t be matched. JO’G » If you were asked to give a speech at graduation what would the theme be?

EG » I would give a speech about living in the moment. Each second is precious and I think everyone has realized that during this pandemic at least once.

JO’G » What is the one thing the world needs to know about Emily Guenther?

EG »

I care about my friends and put their wellbeing above almost everything else. They have been and always will be there for me and I plan on doing the same for them.
