Senior Spotlight: Hun School’s Emily Albanese

- Joe O’Gorman Columnist

As the spring sports season has been canceled, The Trentonian continues to recognize the girl’s lacrosse seniors that were denied their final season.

Emily Albanese has been a part of the athletic fabric at Hun for all four years playing field hockey and lacrosse. A year ago, on the lacrosse field she tallied 10 goals and whether it was patrolling the midfield or on the attack Albanese was always a force to be reckoned with.

A consummate team players here are her thoughts on the season and life.

JO’G » What were your thoughts when the season was canceled?

EA» When I was first told we weren’t going to have a season I was so sad and in disbelief. It was something so abnormal I didn’t even know what to think since we have never really dealt with something like COVID-19 before. I had no words to describe how disappointed I was not to be able to play one last time. Me and the other seniors were devastated that we weren’t going to get our senior day, play our last time together, create our last memories at Hun, and show how our hard work since freshman year payed off. I am grateful we were able to go on our preseason trip in Florida which gave me a little preview of what the season was going to be like. The team was so well bonded on and off the field and played so well together. I knew that we were going to do great things this year and I was so upset I wasn’t able to play my last year with a team that had such great chemistry. I had no idea that my junior year season was actually going to be my last season.

JO’G » What were your hopes and expectations for this season?

EA » My hope was to win one tournament. Ever since my freshman year I have always wanted to win one tournament whether it was MAPLS, Prep-A, or MCTs. I expected our team to play selflessly and have a better season than we have had in the past. I knew that this wouldn’t be hard for us to do since we have such great chemistry and all really care for each other and always want to help one and another.

JO’G » Field Hockey or lacrosse, which is your favorite?

EA» I have had such different experiences with both sports. I love playing both of them and staying active but I would have to say lacrosse is definitely my favorite. JO’G » What are your plans for the fall?

EA » I plan on attending Syracuse University this fall while majoring in Nutrition. JO’G » What is your favorite Hun School moment?

EA» It is hard to pick one of my favorite Hun School moments since I have so many. I would have to say that all the preseason trips are my favorite. My favorite spring break trip was the one we took this year to Orlando Florida for lacrosse. We had a smaller team this year with a smaller group of girls who came on the trip so it really allowed us all to bond and connect with each other.

JO’G » What life lessons have you learned from this pandemic?

EA» One major life lesson I learned was to stay patient and rather than dreading my time during quarantine waiting for it to be over, I should enjoy it by working out outside more, learning something new, redoing my room, etc. At some point there will be a cure and vaccine and the spread will slowly stop and I just need to be patient waiting for more news and research to come out.

JO’G » What is the one thing the world needs to know about Emily Albanese? EA» One thing about me is that before playing varsity lacrosse and field hockey, I used to cheer competitively for 10 years and do gymnastics for 5 years. Cheer took over my life when I was younger. I used to practice 4 days a week for 2 and a half hours and would travel every weekend to compete. It was my passion but unfortunately I had to stop once I went to high school.
