Ewing’s Sheridan earns Trenton HoF scholarship
Although Jentle Sheridan got off to a relatively late start in the sport of softball, it sure didn’t take her very long to catch up.
As a result, the recent Ewing High School graduate ended up as one of the six $2,500 scholarship winners awarded each year by the Trenton Softball Hall of Fame.
Also an outstanding student, Sheridan is all set to continue her softball career in the fall at Gettysburg College where she intends to study science and pre-med. Her ultimate goal is to become an anesthesiologist.
An outfielder with a strong arm, Sheridan combines a short game from the left-hand side of the plate with the ability to drive the ball. Throw in her speed and she’s excellent at beating out bunts and slaps as well as racing around the bases for extra-base hits.
“She has improved a tremendous amount,’’ said Ewing coach Dan Bernoski of a player who first took up softball in eighth grade. “She’s so athletically gifted she was able to easily switch to the other side. And she’s so fast, batting left-handed is perfect for her. She’s very coachable and a hard worker, too.’’
A four-year varsity player, Sheridan received All-Colonial Valley Conference recognition by The Trentonian last year and was a starting outfielder on the Mercer County Carpenter Cup team. She was also the captain of this past spring’s Ewing softball team, although that season was canceled by the coronavirus.
While her softball career continued to blossom, she remained a top player on the Ewing High basketball team. She was the captain of the Blue Devils this past school year and was named to The Trentonian’s All-CVC basketball first team. Sheridan played varsity basketball for four years at Ewing and was a member of the 2017 and 2018 teams that won sectional titles.
Her academic achievements are also impressive. With the help of the Princeton University Preparatory Program, Sheridan is a member of the National Honors Society and maintained a 4.1 GPA on a scale of 4.0.
Sheridan is also the latest in a very long line of softball players at Ewing High who excelled in the classroom. It seems every year Bernoski’s team has at least two or three National Honors students, and some years it’s even more.
The other softball players to receive scholarships from the Trenton Softball Hall of Fame are Steinert’s Alex Haley and the Hun School’s Gigi Venizelos. The three baseball scholarship winners are Trenton Catholic’s Ali Pompey, Steinert’s C.J. Pittaro and Hopewell Valley’s Kenny Tagliareni.
