SANDERS, GOEDERT PICK UP INJURIES

- — Bob Grotz

PHILADELPHIA » Training camp injuries are piling up for the Eagles.

Running back Miles Sanders and tight end Dallas Goedert joined the list Wednesday, Sanders with a lower body issue significant enough for him to be listed week to week, Goedert with an upper body problem that’s day to day. Running back Boston Scott (lower body) and oft-injured cornerback Sidney Jones (lower body) also were added to the list as day to day.

The Eagles have been practicing without defensive tackle Javon Hargrave (pectoral strain), one of their marquee additions in free agency and defensive end Derek Barnett (ankle). The Eagles listed Hargrave out for multiple weeks while Barnett is week to week. Though head coach Doug Pederson was unavailable to discuss the injuries, the Eagles privately indicated the setbacks are unlikely to linger into the regular season. Nonetheless, that doesn’t give the walking wounded much time to get comfortable with one another because the Eagles open play against Washington Sept. 13 at FedEx Field.

The Eagles are counting on Barnett (6-3, 259) to play a significant role setting the edge and rushing the passer. Yet questions persist about Barnett’s size and the impact it has on his ability to stay healthy. He’s missed a dozen games over the past two seasons.

“I think the injuries he’s had are not related to that,” defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz said. “I have had a lot of really big guys that have had injuries there too. It’s a physical game. It’s a physical position. Defensive tackle and defensive end, I think are the only positions that make contact with somebody on every single play. … There’s a toll that has on you and Derek plays so hard and plays so wide open, he doesn’t take any plays off. I still am very pleased with where Derek is, and I think he’s going to have an outstanding year this year.”
