Team chemistry key for West Windsor
From the second the boys on the West Windsor Little League All-Star team walked into the room, you could tell there was chemistry.
That bond amongst the team may be the key to how well West Windsor can perform at the District-12 Tournament.
“There’s very good chemistry,” manager Nirav Kher said. “They’re very tight. We’re looking forward to them playing together as a team, and most importantly, supporting each other. We expect good things.”
The eight-team double elimination tournament, which was delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, is scheduled to get underway on Friday with two games at Sunnybrae LL and two at Nottingham LL. All games after Friday’s opening round will be held at Sunnybrae, with the championship round set to begin on Saturday, Sept. 12.
West Windsor opens against East Windsor at 5:45 p.m. on Friday in a game to be played at Nottingham.
“The kids are excited to be playing this year because we didn’t think we would have a shot,” Kher said. “Just happy that we’re getting this opportunity with it being the final year of them playing together. They’re such great friends and they’ve had such a great summer. We’re looking to go out with a bang.”
Kher pointed to West Windsor’s pitching and defense as keys to keeping it in games. If that happens, the offense will have a chance to win games with timely hits.
“You got to have clutch hitting,” Kher said. “One of the things we focus on with the kids is situational hitting. We have some power hitters, but always going for the fences isn’t going to win us games. We need to get the timely hits with runners in scoring positions. If we put hits together, we can string together some runs.”
