Snow days? Snow yeah!

Do snow days even matter during remote everything?

At first, my position on snow days for children in these, the Pandemic Times, was simple: No, no way should there be snow days, they’re already set up for online learning, they should learn, save the snow days, this is ridiculous, we’re making them soft, trophies for everyone, etc.

And then I spent about .2 seconds thinking about it last week when the snow was a-comin’ and … and my goodness, what has become of me, when did I become an ogre, I need to re-evaluate my entire life.

For real: We have lost so much in 2020. Our entire way of life has been put on pause in a bestcase scenario, irrevocably changed in a mediumcase scenario, and pretty much kaputz in a worstcase scenario.

And there I was, wanting to take snow days away from innocent children. What kind of monster am I?

Well, thankfully, as explained above, I came to my senses. If there’s enough snow on the ground that school would have been canceled in the Days Before, then I say close the schools in these, the New Days.

It’s exactly what happened in most districts last week, and I’m glad for it. My 11-year-old son, for instance, was out sledding from 9 a.m. until 6:30 p.m. Never seen the kid so tired in my life by the time he got home.

And I’ll tell you this:

While school is important, so is sledding until exhaustion. In fact, on a one-to-one basis, you can easily argue one day of sledding to exhaustion is more valuable than one day of pre-calculus. Or simple addition. Or whatever they teach 11-yearolds these days. (My wife has assumed full control of our kids’ edumacations, thanks very much.)

At any rate, as we’re two days into winter, and I’ve got one thing left to say when it comes to school and inclement weather: Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow.
