Skee Wee! AKA Sorority hosts Dr. MLK Breakfast
The high-pitched sound made by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority members as a personal greeting or to let others know their ranks have arrived allegedly can break glass.
Think Ella Fitzgerald and that memorable Memorex advertisement that remains timeless.
Skee Wee! Make some joyful noise for Ivy League Educational Foundation, charitable arm of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Epsilon Upsilon Omega Chapter’s 40th Annual Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Commemorative Virtual Scholarship Breakfast.
The Breakfast will be held on Monday, January 18, 2021via Zoom. It’s virtual this year as COVID-19 rampages the world and nation.
“The theme of our 2021 Breakfast is: “40 Years: Celebrating, Reminiscing, Engaging in Good Trouble”,” Lauren Washington, co-chair for the highly successful event, explained.
“Normally, our event occurs inside a local hotel conference or banquet hall. Presenting virtually provided challenges. It’s been a rollercoaster.”
Washington offered an understandable assessment as the pandemic has pressured most residents to shriek higher-decibel expletives under cover of masks.
Whether AKA members press flesh inside a banquet hall or connect via social media, the sorority delivers significant impact.
Sherri Eure, president of Ivy League Educational Foundation and Washington’s mother, enjoys an extensive connection with the Dr. King breakfast.
“As an attendee and planner (for more than 30 years), it’s been a labor of love. The coronavirus forced us to look differently at our event. We have another powerful program with an inspirational speaker and outstanding sponsors,” Eure said.
Eure described a scholarship program that supports a next wave of higher education dreamers.
Since its inception in 2002, the Foundation has awarded over $70,000 in scholarships and book awards to high school students and has contributed generously to other groups that share this mission.
Most of the students to whom the Foundation has given financial assistance have been students whose families are considered low or moderate income and who need financial assistance to attend college.
Plus, the Dr. King Breakfast honors organizations that positively impact local communities. Safe Haven and Loaves and Fishes receive acknowledgement this year.
Guest Speaker for the event is Rev. Dr. Michael C.R. Nabors.
Interestingly, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. Epsilon Upsilon Omega basks in spotlight over the next several days.
Capital City Area Black Caucus (CCABC), a think tank that focuses on City of Trenton and Mercer County issues, honored the sorority during a Saturday event.
Nearly every Sorority member can claim at least a modicum of contributions made in the shattering of glass ceilings or opening doors for others. Frequently it’s energy passed from mother to daughter as with Eure (Fisk University) and daughter Washington (Colgate) while other times the success transmits through sisterhood.
Achievements by others can generate unimaginable dreams and success stories.
On Wednesday, Vice-President Elect Kamala Harris takes the oath of office as the first black female.
In 1986, Harris pledged AKA as an undergrad at Howard University in Washington DC. during her senior year.
Washington blushed amazement and anticipation.
“I think Kamala is a game changer. Not only is she my sorority sister but she is also a woman who is in a few days going to hold one of the highest positions in our government,” Washington praised.
“I think she is going to accomplish great things in the White House and I’m looking forward to see what this administration can do. She has a vast amount of experience and she is able to bring people out and bring people together. Most importantly, Vice-President-elect Harris represents women of color.”
