Rider bounces back by smacking Clarion
Rebounding from a season-opening loss in convincing style, the Rider University wrestling team cruised past Clarion, 309, in an away match Saturday afternoon.
Rider started fast on a major by Tyler Klinsky at 125 and Richie Koehler’s 8-2 victory at 133. After Clarion got on the board at 141, Rider ripped off five straight wins against its Western Pennsylvania Mid-American Conference opponent.
One of those wins was turned in by standout Jesse Dellavecchia at 157 pounds.
Ranked fourth in the country by InterMat, Dellavecchia scored a couple of quick takedowns before launching Trevor Elfin with an inside trip and taking him straight to his back for a pin at the 2:29
mark.
Jake Silverstein followed with an 8-4 win at 165. After falling behind against Kolby Ho, Silverstein stormed back and scored the winning points with a freighttrain double late in the third period.
Ranked 12th in the country, Rider heavyweight Ethan Laird wrestled well when he majored Tyler Bagoly, 12-4. Bagoly was ranked 25th in the country in one poll, but was dominated on his feet by the Rider senior.
A transfer from Rutgers, Rider’s Matt Correnti was overpowered and pinned by Greg Bulsak in a time of 2:53 at 197
pounds. Bulsak is 11th in the country in the latest InterMat rankings.
