Vince W. Mattis, age 85, loving husband, father, and grandfathe­r, passed away on March 5, 2021, at home surrounded by his family. Born in Brooklyn, New York in 1935, he resided in Hamilton Township where he and his wife raised their family, until moving to Bordentown Township in 2002.

Vince honorably served his country with the United States Air Force from 1954 to 1958. In 1959 he graduated from the 55th New Jersey State Police Class. Vince retired from the NJSP after 28 years as a Lieutenant and he served in various assignment­s including Turnpike Trooper, Academy Instructor, and Criminal Investigat­ion Section Detective.

In 1987, he began a second career with Selective Insurance Company where he was employed for the next 24 years as a Special Investigat­or.

Vince attended Hamilton Township Schools while growing up. He graduated from Mercer County Community College, Stockton University, and Central Michigan University where he obtained a Master’s Degree in Public Administra­tion.

He was a proud member of the New Jersey Former Troopers Associatio­n, the New Jersey Special Investigat­ors Associatio­n and the American Legion.

In his earlier years, Vince was an avid long-distance runner and competed in many races throughout the area. He was a strong handball player who competed in both indoor and outdoor courts throughout the state and he played on numerous softball teams in the area. Vince was a longtime member of the Hamilton YMCA and would rarely miss a day in the gym.

Vince especially loved the company of his four grandchild­ren and spending time with the family dogs. He was known to go through extraordin­ary lengths to see every game, race, or match for each of his grandchild­ren.

He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Joan Nagy Mattis; a son and daughter-in-law, Vance and Kelly Mattis; a daughter and son-in-law, Kimberly and James Varaitis; and four grandchild­ren, Olivia Mattis, Jacob Mattis, Owen Varaitis and Lily Varaitis.

Visitation for family and friends will be held on Wednesday, March 10, 2021, from 11:00 a.m. until 12:30 p.m., with a funeral service beginning at 12:30 p.m., at the Saul Colonial Home, 3795 Nottingham Way, Hamilton Square, NJ.

Entombment will follow at Greenwood Cemetery Mausoleum in Hamilton, NJ.

Due to funeral restrictio­ns, the staff at the Saul Colonial Home respectful­ly requests that all funeral attendees wear a face covering during all services for Mr. Mattis. We appreciate your cooperatio­n.
