The Trentonian (Trenton, NJ)

Winner, Winner Cheesesteak for Dinner

-

March 24th is National Cheesesteak Day and The Original Gaetano’s Cheesesteaks on Route 33 in Hamilton Square was featured in two publications as the premier place in the state to go get one. Although the release of the articles were not in Mercer County but rather Hunterdon, Middlesex and Somerset that did not stop the influx of out of town visitors making the journey on a rainy day. “We baked extra rolls for the day knowing it would be a busy one, but it exceeded our expectations” the owner said. Phones rang consistently throughout the day making it the busiest lunches they’ve had in a year. “Lunch business was the biggest hit we took when everyone went to working from home or losing their job and they shut down indoor dining, not to mention distributors closing, rising prices and limitations on products. Luckily, we have been able to keep afloat with community support and just absolute determination to get past this last year of insanity.” They feel honored to be recognized as one of the best cheesesteaks in the state. It seems that they are fast becoming the place to go rather than crossing the bridge to Philadelphia. The owner says, “We get visitors from all over the place all the time. People making an hour or two drive is normal on a weekend. Two guys once drove from Alabama after seeing our video on Facebook, which blew my mind. Back when you could travel internationally I gave a business card to a guy in Europe and told him if he ever comes to America to come try a cheesesteak; about 8 months later he walked in with it, had his first ever cheesesteak and loved it! Nothing surprises me now, people love to eat and food is the great equalizer.”
