Florence Holiday Bishop, Flo Jo, passed away of natural causes July 22, 2021 at Capital Health Hopewell Regional Hospital.

Florence was born as an only child to Hosea Holiday and Ella Watts on November 16, 1929 in Trenton, NJ.

Florence was married to Robert G. Bishop Sr. in 1950. They had six children, Brent Loring Bishop, Robert G. Bishop Jr, Steven Oliver Bishop, Sandra E. Bishop (deceased), Ramona Bishop, and Curtis Bishop.

In 1946, as a student at Trenton High School, Florence became the First African American Cheerleade­r.

Florence received her AA degree from (former) Trenton College, now known as Mercer County Community College. She received her BA degree from Ramapo College. After she raised her 6 children as a single mom, she went back to college and earned her Master’s degree.

Florence started her career as an entry level secretary for the state of New Jersey. She was promoted numerous times throughout her career, concluding with the department of Public Advocate, division of citizen complaints and dispute resolution department. She retired after serving 32 years for the state of New Jersey in the fall of 1989.

Our mother had an amazing will power. She made friends from all walks of life. She played an important role in our lives and was very inspiratio­nal. We are thankful, and truly blessed for having her as our mother. We will always love, cherish and live in her spirit.

Funeral service will be 10am Thursday, July 29, 2021 at Hughes Funeral Home, 324 Bellevue Ave., Trenton, NJ 08618. Calling hour will be 9am until the time of service. Interment will be at Ewing Cemetery, Ewing, NJ.
