MCT heads into quarterfin­al round

The 41st annual Mercer County Baseball Tournament continues Wednesday with the quarterfin­al round, which will include a few teams some may not have been expecting to see.

Head coach Steve Kowalski’s 12th-seeded Pennington School squad pulled off the biggest first-round upset by defeating fifthseede­d Allentown High, 7-2, last Thursday. Pennington (7-7) moves on to play at fourth-seeded Hamilton West (12-6) at 4 p.m. Wednesday in one quarterfin­al.

Head coach Steve LaRochelle’s 10th-seeded Lawrencevi­lle School club knocked off seventh-seeded Princeton High, 4-1, in the opening round to earn its third meeting of the season with its Mid-Atlantic Prep League and NJISAA Prep A foe, the Hun School.

The Big Red (9-5 heading into Tuesday night’s game vs. St. Joe’s-Metuchen at Trenton Thunder Ballpark) will visit the secondseed­ed Raiders (14-2 heading into Tuesday’s MAPL game with Peddie) for a 4:15 p.m. MCT quarterfin­al Wednesday.

Head coach Mike Kinsella’s ninth-seeded Robbinsvil­le High team (9-8) held off eighthseed­ed Ewing, 7-5, last week and now gets a shot at top-seeded Notre Dame High (14-1) at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Head coach Justin Ely’s sixth-seeded West Windsor-Plainsboro High South squad (84-1) rallied past 11thseeded Hopewell Valley for a 5-2 win, which earned it a second stop at third-seeded Steinert (15-4) at 4:15 p.m. Wednesday.

In MCT consolatio­n games, Lawrence High will take on Allentown at Dan Venet Field at 4 p.m. Wednesday. WW-P North will cross Route 1 to play at Princeton at 4:15 p.m. that same day. Hightstown will be at Hopewell Valley at 4 p.m. Thursday.

Wednesday’s quarterfin­al winners advance

to play at Bob DeMeo Field in Hamilton’s Veterans Park Tuesday, May 17 at either 3:30 p.m. or 7 p.m.

The MCT baseball championsh­ip game is set for 7 p.m. Thursday, May 19 at Trenton Thunder Ballpark.
