German set to rehab for Somerset in Reading

Two days after hosting Aroldis Chapman, the Somerset Patriots will be taking the field with another rehabbing Yankee.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone told the New York media that Domingo German is set to make a rehab start for Somerset on Tuesday night in Reading.

German, who has been on the injured list since March 18 with right shoulder impingement syndrome, made his first rehab outing for Low-A Tampa last Wednesday and pitched three scoreless innings.

The 29-year-old will jump up two levels for his next start as part of the process to returning to the Yankees sometime in July. He will likely need a few more rehab appearances until he has built up his arm strength to pitch for the major-league club again, likely in a long-relief role since the Yankees currently have five healthy starting pitchers.

German, who pitched for the Trenton Thunder during the 2017 season, has pitched in 77 games (56 as a starter) for the Yankees. His best season came in 2019 when he struck out 153 batters in 143 innings while posting a 4.03 ERA and 1.14 WHIP.

Meanwhile, Chapman (Achilles tendinitis) is likely to be activated from the injured list this week after rehabbing with a pair of scoreless innings for Somerset last Friday and Sunday at TD Bank Ballpark. The 34-yearold left-hander is expected to resume closer duties upon rejoining the Yankees’ bullpen.

The Patriots are set to begin six straight games in Reading on Tuesday after clinching the Eastern League’s Northeast Division first-half title Sunday with a 6-5 win in extra innings against Hartford.
