Former Hightstown standout Quigg anchors Monmouth men’s lax
Michael Quigg was recognized in the All-Colonial Athletic Association preseason men’s lacrosse team, and so far he’s living up to the billing.
The former Hightstown High standout anchored the Monmouth defense to a pair of wins over NJIT and LIU and was named the CAA Defensive Player of the Week.
Quigg recorded a career-high three caused turnovers and scooped up four ground balls in a win over NJIT.
The senior defender added one caused turnover and one ground ball in a 10-6 victory over LIU as the Monmouth defense held the Sharks to one goal over the final 40 minutes of the contest.
Quigg was a first-team All-MAAC selection last season and has been a two-time MAAC All-Academic selection.
The former Colonial Valley Conference Player of the Year has 30 career ground balls and 17 caused turnovers.
Local Athletes Boost TCNJ to NJAC Title
Valandra Riggins (Lawrence) was a part of the 4×200-meter relay that broke a school record and was the second fastest time in NCAA history at 1:40.49 as the Lions won their fifth straight conference title. Mount Union ran a 1:40.25 two weeks ago. Salini Iyer (WW-P North) was second in the 300-meter and Kerri McCarthy (Allentown) was third in the shot put at 12.17 meters.
Roman Rychkov (Robbinsville) placed third in 600 meter and other local track and field conference champions are Jahmir Anderson (Lawrence), Benjamin Fanta (WW-P South) and Matthew Plumeri (Steinert).
Lane Leads New Haven to Conference Final
Quashawn Lane (Trenton Catholic) had a team-high 17 points to lead New Haven to a Northeast-10 semifinal win over Southern New Hampshire.
“It feels amazing,” Lane said, in the press release. “Definitely a lot of energy in the gym. We knew we had a lot of people against us so we knew we had to bring the energy. I thought we came out strong. In the first half, we held them to 16 points so that really gave us a lot of energy coming
out of the first half as well.”
Lane also had four rebounds and three assists.
He also was named to the All-Northeast-10 First team.
Johnson, Weise Named All-PSAC
Leah Johnson (Notre Dame) and Ryan Weise (Allentown) have been named to the All-PSAC Eastern Division First Team from West Chester and East Stroudsburg respectively.
Johnson recently had 20 points, seven rebounds and five assists for West Chester in a 76-61 win over Millersville in the PSAC quarterfinals.
The Rams will now face California University of Pennsylvania in the semifinals.
Johnson averages 15.4 points a game, 6.2 rebounds and her 192 assists are second in the conference. She leads the PSAC in Assist/Turnover Ratio with a 2.2 mark.
Weise had 27 points, five assists, six rebounds and three steals for East Stroudsburg in a PSAC playoff loss to Millersville. .Weise leads the conference in 3-pt field goal percentage.
Local Players Have Big Day at New Jersey City
Jimmy Vizzoni (Trenton Catholic) led the hit parade with three hits and an RBI in New Jersey City’s win over Haverford.
Freshman Dom Yarson (Ewing) continued to play well with a pair of hits, including a triple and Yarson pitched 1.1 innings
and had two strikeouts.
Ali Pompey (Trenton Catholic) had two hits, including an RBI double.

He was second on the team in scoring at 12.3 points a game. …Jamir Watkins (Trenton Catholic) had 10 points and seven rebounds for VCU in a win over St. Louis. … Kadian Dawkins (Rancocas Valley) averaged 11.0 points and a team high eight assists for Stockton in the NJAC playoffs.
