Fire Department announces second year of Junior Public Safety Academy
Tuesday morning the second year of the Junior Public Safety Academy was announced. The summer program looks to provide Trenton youth with public safety training, at TFD headquarters on Perry Street.
Created by Fire Director Kenneth Douglas and lead instructor Brian Roberts last year, the Trenton Fire Department set out to make a program that pushes kids past their comfort zones but also gives them skills and experience that can benefit them long after the summer program ends.
In its first year, 15 students participated in the program, learning boat safety, swimming, scuba diving, and firefighting. Participants earned multiple certifications, individual awards, and took a trip to the World Trade Center.
“The success of this program last year was wonderful to witness. I hope to replicate and expand its success this year and for years to come. We’re thankful for the ongoing support from our city, county, and state partners,” said Director Douglas.
Mayor Reed Gusciora affirmed, “Investment in our City’s youth is an investment in our City’s future.
This and other youth-centered programs will help our City be better informed, educated, and motivated to serve their fellow Trentonians for many years to come. I’m thankful to Director Kenneth Douglas for creating the program and to our Trenton firefighters who support the operations of the program.”
“Learning shouldn’t stop when school ends. Providing these educational opportunities during the summer months can keep our youth busy and entertained while continuing to grow their knowledge outside of the classroom. The knowledge and experience this program provides can help our youth make safer, more informed choices, benefitting themselves as well as the community at large,” said At-Large Trenton City Councilwoman Jasi Edwards.
The program is open to students ages 12-16, and will run from July 11th through August 25th from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. For more information, parents and students may contact Firefighter Eric Johnson at 609-424-6011 or ericjohnson@trentonnj.org.
