Rider baseball uses longball to power past Villanova

The Rider baseball team turned on the power.

Scott Shaw launched a grand slam, Brendan O’Donnell and Luke Lesch also homered and the Broncs beat Villanova, 11-3, in the first game of a twinbill.

Frank Doelling allowed one run on four hits and struck out four over five innings to pick up the win for Rider (12-6).

TCNJ 4, FDU-FLORHAM 3 AUBURNDALE, FLA. >>

Zach Hochheiser singled in the winning run in the 12th inning to give the Lions (7-5) a victory over the Devils (5-7) at the RussMatt Invitation­al. Jackson Malouf delivered a quality start for TCNJ by striking out eight over seven innings of one-run ball.

Men’s Lacrosse RUTGERS 11, UMASS 5 AMHERST, MASS. >>

Scott Ross scored both of his goals during a secondquar­ter run and the seventh-ranked Scarlet Knights (7-1) rolled past the Minutemen (4-3). David Sprock, Dante Kulas and Eric Civetti also had two goals each for Rutgers.

MARYLAND 16, RUTGERS 8 PISCATAWAY >> Former Allentown standout Marin Hartshorn scored five goals for the 22ndranked Scarlet Knights (4-4, 0-2), but they weren’t able to keep pace against the 11th-ranked Terrapins (7-3, 1-0) in Big Ten actin.

PENN STATE 16, PRINCETON 14 PRINCETON >>

Gretchen Gilmore scored twice in the final 5:30 and the 25th-ranked Nittany Lions (5-2) clipped the 14th-ranked Tigers (33). Kari Buonanno had four goals for Princeton, with her fourth tally giving the home side the lead with 10 minutes remaining.

TCNJ 16, ROANOKE 9 EWING >>

Ally Tobler and Ann Wright had four goals each and the 22nd-ranked Lions (60) downed the 18thranked Maroons (6-1) in a match up of two unbeaten teams.

Softball PRINCETON 12, YALE 0 PRINCETON >>

Alexis Laudenslag­er struck out 10 in a five-inning nohitter, Julia Dumais had three hits and the Tigers (5-12, 1-0) blanked the Bulldogs (5-10, 0-1) in the Ivy League opener.

Jadeyn Merril hit her first career home run, Jesse Niegocki struck out five and the Broncs (5-13) beat North Dakota to split a pair of games at the Capital City Classic. Rider dropped its opener to Bucknell in eight innighs.
