CYO Scores: TCPA wins Boys Varsity title

It was championsh­ip Sunday at the Mercer County CYO Basketball League, and there were some thrilling contests to close out another successful season.

Six division titles were decided, regular season and playoff Most Valuable Player trophies were awarded, and many other teams and players were recognized.

Boys Varsity

The final game saw No. 4 Trenton Catholic Preparator­y Academy upset No. 3 St. Paul’s 48-40 as Jayden Sprull netted 16 points and was named playoff Most Valuable Player.

Regular season Most Valuable Player was St. Paul’s Sebastian Kyler in the Large School Division, and over in the Small School Division, Brennon Babkowski from Our Lady of Sorrows was named the Most Valuable Player.

The Individual Sportsmans­hip Award went to Ayden White, from TCPA White. TCPA White was also Team Sportsmans­hip winner.

Girls Varsity

Top-seeded St. Gregory’s Blue lived up to the hype and defeated No. 2 Our Lady of Sorrows, 3717 in the title game as Playoff MVP Bella Rosa paced St. Gregory’s Blue with 10 points.

The MVP award for the regular season in the Large School Division went to Sienna Golizio from St. Gregory’s Blue.

Stuart’s Liz States was the regular season Small School Division Most Valuable Player.

The Individual Sportsmans­hip winner was Devon Haggerty from Our Lady of Sorrows, and the Team Sportsmans­hip winner was St. Paul’s White.

Boys Junior Varsity

It was a tight battle between No. 1 St. Gregory’s Blue and No. 2 St. John’s. St. Gregory’s Blue needed all of Je D’Uva’s 17 points to become the champion with a 32-28 victory.

D’Uva was named the playoff and regular season Most Valuable Player in the Large School Division.

St. John’s Gianni Collela was named the Small School Division Most Valuable Player.

This marked the second straight season that Chandler Brown of St. Ann’s was the Individual Sportsmans­hip winner. St. Ann’s was also named the Team Sportsmans­hip winner.

Girls Junior Varsity

Sophia Lo was named the Playoff Most Valuable Player after her 11 points sparked No. 1 St. Gregory’s to a 30-29 win over No. 3 St. Raphael’s in the championsh­ip game.

Sloane Woods from St. Gregory’s Blue was the Large School Most Valuable Player. Stuart’s Juliette Teaney was named the Small School Most Valuable Player.

The Individual Sportsmans­hip Award went to Catherine Teeley from St. Paul’s White, and her team earned the Team Sportsmans­hip Award.

Boys Freshmen

St. Paul’s Gold claimed the division championsh­ip with a 27-23 win over St. Gregory’s Blue as Will Okupski netted nine points.

Girls Freshmen

St. Raphael’s cruised to the championsh­ip of league as the No. 1 seed.
