Giants signing free agent guard Runyan Jr. for three years

The Eagles signed the Giants’ running back. So the Giants are signing the son of a former Eagles great.

The Giants agreed to terms Monday with free agent guard Jon Runyan Jr. on a three-year, $30 million contract including $17 million fully guaranteed at signing, as first reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The deal is not official until Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Runyan, 26, was a sixthround pick in 2020 and started all but one of the Packers’ 51 regular-season games over the past three seasons. He has primarily been at right guard, which is a position of need for the Giants after trying out multiple starters there last season including Mark Glowinski, Ben Bredeson and Marcus McKethan.

Runyan’s father, Jon Runyan, played for the Eagles from 2000-08 and made the Pro Bowl in 2002. He was also the U.S. representative for New Jersey’s 3rd congressional district from 2011-15.

By signing Runyan Jr. and allowing Saquon Barkley to leave, general manager Joe Schoen has established that the Giants are committed to fortifying their offensive line, which has plagued the franchise for more than a decade.

Schoen will not pay a premium for non-premium positions, so running back is not a high priority this offseason — at least not an expensive one.

NFL Network’s Ian Rapaport reported Monday that the Giants agreed on a contract with former Texans running back Devin Singletary. The 26-year-old former third-round pick rushed for a career-high 898 yards on 216 carries with four touchdowns last season as part of a two-man backfield with Dameon Pierce.

On the offensive line, the Giants also have established starters at left tackle in Andrew Thomas and center in John Michael Schmitz, who have been first- and secondround draft picks since 2020, respectively.

Left guard is a question mark as Justin Pugh is a free agent. The 33-year-old told The Trentonian last November that he intends to retire if the Giants don’t re-sign him.

The Giants will likely pursue reinforcements at right tackle, as 2022 first-round pick Evan Neal was a disappointment in his first two NFL seasons.

The Giants also lost safety Xavier McKinney, who is signing a four-year, $68 million deal — a $17 million per year average — with the Packers, according to Schefter and then confirmed by his agent David Mulugheta.
