Yates Coins and Precious Metals LLC continues community tradition
Do you remember your first collection?
Maybe it was baseball cards or records. Perhaps sea shells or Pokemon cards.
You may have had a coin collection!
That’s what Scott Yates, owner of Yates Coins and Precious Metals LLC in Ewing, N.J., collected as a boy.
Over time, that hobby became an interest that went beyond filling coin books with specific dates.
Yates began studying coin varieties and their values based on condition and rarity. Error coins were of particular interest, especially among pennies.
So much so, that in the early days, it was common for people
to empty their pockets, mason jars and occasionally 5-gallon water jugs in hopes their keen-eyed friend would
spot the rare treasure hiding among their spoils, leading to a windfall and making their day!
Every once in a while that’s just what happened.
A hobby becomes a career
Initially, Yates searched for those treasures at home or while working at his other jobs.
Eventually, his interest grew into an expertise based on experience and education.
Then, a dozen years ago, when he joined Colavita Coins on Scotch Road in Ewing as a full time employee, his hobby blossomed into a career.
Yates’ numismatic skills continued to develop and recently, when the owner retired, Yates jumped at the opportunity to open his own coin shop in the same location to continue serving his friends and many loyal customers, as well as welcoming new ones.

For over 30 years, the coin shop at Scotch Road Plaza in Ewing has attracted collectors of all ages.
