NBL Wrestling Champs on to NCS
Last Friday, Feb. 14, the UHS varsity boys’ wrestling squad eased into the NBL league championship over all other wrestling teams in the Oak and Redwood Divisions. They had six (6) champions in the weight classes. Here’s how the boys fared:
At 106, Peyton Macdonald (grade 10) and 3513 overall for the season took second place. At 113, Joseph Marquez (10th) and 6-22 overall was 5th in the NBL.
At 126, Casey Aikman (10th grade) was 26 wins, 9 losses this year won league.
At 132 pounds, Charles Cliburn (11th) was 32-10 for the year and will be 1st alt at NCS.
At 138 lbs, Victor Alonzo (11th) 21-22 overall, was 3rd in the NBL. At 145, Taj Capri (11th) 32-10 for the year and league champion. At 152, Marcus Avalos ( 12 grade) was 10- 4 this year, and finished 3rd in NBL.
At 160, Martin Calderon (10th) was 23-6 and was 3rd in the NBL. At 170, Adrian Alvarez (12th) was 36- 4 and NBL Champ; he was also 6th in NCS (2019).
At 182, William Schwarm (11th) was 12-9 and is the 1st alternate in NCS. At 195Frankie Pomilia (12th) was 34-5 this year as he won the NBL crown. In 2019, he was 3rd in NCS.
At 220, Jack Bednar (10th) was 30-12 and was crowned champ at NBL’s. At 285, Brandon Vargas (11) was 24-15 and was no. 1 in NBL’s.
They will compete in the North Coast Sections, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21, 22 at James Logan HS in Union City, California.
Last Saturday, Feb. 15, the UHS varsity girls’ wrestling squad placed 2nd behind Windsor High School in the NBL finals at Analy High School. The Lady Cats had five champions: Viviana Nunez, Meilani Sorensen, Madeline Riboli, Taryn Heustis, Steph Gutierrez all achieved the coveted title of champ for 201920.
They travel to Union City for the sections this weekend as well.
