Zoom lecture looks at history of zoo
The Humboldt County Historical Society offers its continuing free lecture series on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The lecture, “The Sequoia Park Zoo: An Evolving Legacy,” will be presented by Gretchen Ziegler and Leigh Pierre-oetker via Zoom hosted by the Humboldt County Library.
The lecture can viewed from the safety and comfort of home on a personal computer, laptop, tablet or smart phone. Space is limited.
The deadline to sign up for access to the lecture is before 5 p.m. Friday.
As the oldest accredited zoo in California, Sequoia Park Zoo has lots of history and many stories to tell.
This lecture will touch brief ly on the past 113 years and its pivotal highlights, and explore a few of the projects on the horizon.
Ziegler, director of the Sequoia Park Zoo, was born and raised in Topeka, Kansas, and grew up planning to be a zookeeper working with big cats. After graduating from Kansas State University she gained experience at several zoos before being hired as head zookeeper at Sequoia Park Zoo in 1995.
Pierre- Oetker received her bachelor’s degree in English from Seattle University and her master’s degree in sociology from Humboldt State University. She has spent her career in Humboldt County working in the philanthropy and nonprofit world. She helped establish the Zoo Foundation in 2004 and served on its board of directors to assist in its initial vision and mission.
