The city of Ukiah again renewed the operating permit for Cannavine on Airport Park Boulevard, a business that is still the only cannabis dispensary operating within the city limits of Ukiah since the sale of recreational cannabis was legalized in the state.

The permit came before Zoning Administrator Craig Schlatter Jan. 12, and during the hearing Schlatter described the business during his visit as “clean, tidy, well-managed, and there’s good security.”

Schlatter said the renewal process also includes an update from the Ukiah Police Department regarding any concerns, and in December, UPD staff reported that the business was “not identified as having significant crime issues, (and) that there have not been significant numbers of calls for police service, crimes or arrests in the area or to an existing dispensary location.”

The report from the UPD only mentions “one call for service due to a subject smoking a controlled substance in the parking lot on Sept 1, 2020, and this subject was unidentified as he/ she left prior to officers arriving.”

Schlatter then approved the renewal of the permit, and confirmed Wednesday that Cannavine is still the only cannabis dispensary operating within the city limits of Ukiah, though three more permits have been approved: 1076 Cunningham St. (Heritage Mendocino), 270-274 E. Smith St. (Wine Country Cannasseurs), and 441 N. State St. (was Element 7, now Vibe).

Last month, Schlatter approved modifying the permit for the dispensary at 441 N. State St. According to the staff report prepared for the Dec. 21 hearing of the Zoning Administrator, the permit was first approved in May of 2020, but “the original permitee, Element 7, has not begun operation at this location. Michael Carlson applied on August 12, 2020, to transfer ownership of the permit to Vibe Ukiah, LLC dba Vibe by California. Minor alterations to the floor plan are also proposed, including removal of the Holistic Center, and increase in retail space.”

The permit modifications were approved by Schlatter.
