How can anyone still support Trump?

- By John Arteaga John Arteaga is a Ukiah resident.

So, after the revelation of Trump’s unhinged threatening phone call to Georgia’s Secretary of State, haranguing the poor guy for over an hour, in his (fortunately recorded) delusional rant demanding and threatening him to, “find” an additional umpteen thousand votes that he needs to win there, are there really simpletons who still support this fool?

How can anyone deny that the sitting President of the United States is mentally ill? The fact that he is incapable of accepting the objective reality that Joe Biden received many millions more votes than him (not to mention trouncing him in the electoral college), in what has proven to be, after numerous hand recounts, a remarkably fair and verifiable election, would seem to classify him as a subject for an involuntary psych hold.

While it has been obvious for years that Orange Man has a not-so-secret longing for the kind of autocratic power exercised by the many dictators that he fawns over, you know that he must be getting desperate, feeling that the walls are closing in on him, when he pardons the admitted Fbi-lying felon Michael Flynn, who is then invited to the Oval Office to give him what can only be considered treasonous advice; that he should declare martial law and employ the military to redo the elections in key states that he lost. Am I missing something here? Shouldn’t these two gentlemen be immediately frog marched to the nearest jail cell for sedition? Today? Before they can do real harm? The fact that he would engage in these preposterous actions, in total contravention of not only the Constitution but democracy itself, makes one shudder to think what else he might consider doing in his last desperate days in office; might he provoke a war to hang onto power? Wise old Prof. Chomsky warned years ago, “People have no idea the lengths that this man will go to to cling to power.”

Another day another outrage; after staying up late last night watching the returns come in in Georgia, the center of the political universe, where this long time red state recently broke free of its ever-since-reconstruction norm to vote for Biden/harris, both of their Republican senators faced runoff votes against exciting progressive Democrats. By the time I hit the hay, Rev. Warnock, the black head preacher of the Ebenezer Baptist Church (a position previously held by MLK) had soundly defeated the inheritance princess blonde who had somehow been appointed to that senatorial seat, but Michael Ossoff, the Democrat who was challenging the other Republican millionaire, who spent more time defending himself against insider-trading charges than doing the people’s business, was a thousand votes short of Perdue.

Oh happy day! The next morning, as votes came in from the more urban, diverse, intelligent sectors of Georgia’s population, it was looking like a sure win for Ossoff, in a race that was called later in the afternoon. Oh what joy!

To have a 50-50 Senate, where the estimable Kamala Harris will have the pleasure of being the tie-breaking vote to finally bring our nation back to a place where it can actually do something other than stuff more money into the pockets of the filthy rich and corporations, which seems to be the perpetual the raison d’être of the Republican Party, even before Trump took it over the tipping point toward corporate fascism, that and packing the federal courts with hundreds of obedient young rightist capons for lifetime appointments despite the fact that almost all of them were rated by the American Bar Association as ‘unqualified’.

It is chilling to think that, due to the intransigence of Mitch Mcconnell’s party-overeverything-else Senate, which denied Pres. Obama his constitutional right to appoint the hundreds of federal judges that he had every right to, we are now saddled with this pathetic bunch ruling over our lives for decades.

Today, after the initial sigh of relief regarding the Georgia senatorial runoffs, we saw the bizarre events in the nation’s capital; after whipping up his loathsome gaggle of cult followers with the usual litany of blatant lies about the crooked election and the vast conspiracy to steal away his ‘yuge’ election victory, Trump openly invites them to basically lay siege to the nation’s seat of democracy, where the certification of the election was taking place that day.

We all saw what happened in the ensuing chaos; the lawless destruction of our democracy’s most sacred edifice; brainless yahoos carrying Jesus and Confederate flags destroying the fine doors and windows so that they could sit like monkeys at the desks of our nation’s representatives, forced to cower and flee in fear.

Thought experiment; try to imagine what would happen if a Black Lives Matter, Antifa or an islamic orator had provoked such lawless destruction. They would be lucky indeed to be merely arrested and thrown into a jail cell, rather than shot on sight, and the vandals would have been mowed down by the score!

After being shamed by Pres. elected Biden’s passionate commentary about this national disgrace, Trump made a pathetic excuse for a call to his brownshirts to stand down, complete with further whining about the stolen election and praise for their efforts.

Thank God Trump has taken his interference with this free and fair election so far off of the rails that even Mike Pence and Mitch Mcconnell are jumping ship, hoping to salvage some tattered shred of decency for their legacy. They are finally even talking about invoking the 25th amendment, where this obviously mentally ill person could be removed from office for the final two weeks of his ignominious reign. At least they didn’t burn the Reichstag down this time. Let’s stop this madman before he does even worse!
