Large bass fishing tourneys coming to Clear Lake

- DON MOIR Thanks for reading, remember to keep it reel. Don 4REEL Fishin

Good day, my fellow anglers. Is it just me or, are people not happy right now? A little kindness goes a long way. Kindness is not always easy but, kindness is contagious. I know we all have had enough with Covid! I believe that we have turned the corner and that soon it will behind us. Be kind to each other.

Blue Lakes

The Upper Blue Lake’s trout fishin’ has picked up some. Patient anglers have been hooking into the majority of rainbows. The trout have been holding at depths of 15-25 feet. So, if you have had a hard time catching one, try one of these methods. One is to rig a small nightcrawler with just a split-shot attached about 12 inches up from the worm. Cast out in the deeper water and allow the bait to sink to the bottom.

Another successful technique is to use a small ball of power bait and fish near the bottom. Also the fishermen who are out on the water trolling have been doing pretty good running an action disc at about 1520 feet deep with a wooly-burger chasing it.

Here’s the good/not so good news! C.D.F.W. trout plant schedule said that last week, the Upper Blue Lake would receive a trout plant but it did not. Maybe this week it will happen.

Clear Lake

The #1 rated bass fishing lake in the United States is getting to be quite the busy place. Many large bass fishing tournaments are coming to town. Matter-in-fact, there are currently approx. 120 bass tournaments scheduled for the 2021 season.

During the next several months I would think that the “local Joe — Fisherman” like me will have a much more enjoyable time on the water fishin’ midweek rather than on the weekends.

Well, the word is that the large swimbait and A Rig bite has slowed up. Most of the bass are staged right off the spawning grounds or are already up in the flats on beds. The bass are schooled up in 8-12 feet of water. Keep movin’. Don’t fall in love with an area. If the bass aren’t willing, move on. You will find them.

The catfishin’ has been good. Those using live bait like crawfish or minnows have been doing the best.

It’s that time of the year again.. Time for the 33rd Annual Clear Lake Team Bass Tournament. March 20 and 21.

Anglers can sign up at the Lake County Chamber of Commerce office, located at 875 Lakeport Blvd. in Lakeport.

Lake Sonoma

Finally some good fishin’ reports coming out of Lake Sonoma. The fall and winter fishing has been pretty tough. But now the bass bite is back! The main body hot spots are anywhere there are running creeks coming into the lake.

Also, Yorty, Cherry, and Skunk Creeks are holding bass that are staged for spawning.

The bass haven’t moved up far yet. They are hanging out near submersed timber. Crankbaits, Spinnerbaits and drop-shottin’ are all working well.

Upper Mill Creek Pond

Fish and Wildlife are busy beavers right now! The word is that last week the Upper Mill Creek Pond got stocked with steelhead/trout. It looks like they will be back to planting the pond about every two weeks now, while the fish last.

My fellow anglers, PLEASE do not allow a few folks to ruin it for the rest of us! If you see anyone doing anything illegal call the California Highway Patrol. This is a great place to take a kid fishin’. It is very important that young anglers have a positive experience when they are learning how to fish. Do not allow others to mess that up. Have fun and be safe.

Well, I couldn’t resist this quote. “Even a fish could stay out of trouble, if it would just learn to keep its mouth shut.” — Unknown
