Ukiah ride raises more than $8,000
David Bookout, owner of Wm. D. Jewelers, is a true Renaissance man. The definition of a Renaissance man is the notion that humans should embrace all knowledge and develop themselves as fully as possible. During the pandemic, he became creative in his store, bringing in a variety of gift items featuring local products as well as some imported under his name.
He is also passionate about his motorcycle habit and has hosted two Distinguished Gentleman’s Rides in Ukiah (2019 and 2021). This year’s ride was Sunday, May 23, worldwide.
The Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride is an annual global motorcycle charity event raising funds and awareness for prostate cancer research and men’s mental health programs on behalf of the Movember Foundation.
A Decade of DGR
From their website: “This year’s event marks the organization’s 10-year anniversary. Without the support of all organizers, volunteers, riders, families, friends we would not have achieved the milestone of raising over $27.45M since our first ride in 2012. Mental Well-being For Motorcyclists: The world is a different place and connecting with friends & family is more important than ever.
We have funded key programs in 2020 that are aimed at both improving the mental well-being of men in motorcycling and also the wider community.” movember@gentlemansride.com
Not letting any grass grow under his feet expanding
his business during a pandemic, Bookout decided to sponsor a Ukiah ride.
“There are so many good things that the Movember charity does for men’s health,” explained Bookout. “The ride had 21 riders dressed in formal and dapper attire and rode on a 25mile ride through the vineyards of the Ukiah Valley. We stopped at Lake Mendocino for photos and then off to a wonderful lunch and awards at the Elks Lodge Park.
“We are very proud of our community for the support that was given to this fundraiser. Our Ukiah ride raised over $8,000 and three of our riders were in the top leaders in this worldwide fundraising event.”
Jason Hartje was 134 in the world and 61 in the USA; David Bookout was 135 in the world and 62 in the USA, and Pat Thornton was 234 in the world and 100 in the USA.
“How many people can say ‘I rode my motorcycle today in a suit and tie,’” he asked with a big smile.
“Thanks again to all riders who participated in the 2021 Ukiah Distinguished Gentleman’s Ride — it was a beautiful day for dressing dapper, and a fun ride for a great cause! Enjoy, and let’s do it again next year!”
